38. Releasing the Upper Body 01/03/04
Below are some instruction and pictures for releasing the muscles of the upper body. By introducing the gentle expansion and contraction of muscle groups with a repetitive movement a releasing action starts to take place in the muscles of those areas being moved. Many times releasing activity may also go beyond an area that is being moved. For example, in many initial sessions while working with the arms the legs may also start some somatic releasing activity which is fine.
Starting in this position, lying down with the arms extended over the head; do one minute of easy full breathing that reaches all the areas of the upper body.

With the shoulder blades relaxed to the ground, slowly bring the hands up to the position in the picture above.
Once completed bring the arms back down to the original position of the first picture. This is a simple repetitive exercise that starts to bring about the trembling of different muscles as you are moving the arms. The sessions can be set for a minimum of 20 minutes or more.
This is the type of session that can be done every once in awhile for releasing the upper body. Many people like to do this after a busy day because of the recuperative value of breathing and releasing even when done for a brief period of time. It is recommended that if a lot of releasing shows up and persists through the time you spend with this position, do this for longer periods until the releasing activity starts to become minimal or you are happy with what has transpired.
For people in any field of active work, sports and participating in an active life style this can provide a wonderful time for you and your body to release from the build up of daily stresses that can accumulate to the body. For the athlete, dancer, and those engaged in the performing arts this releasing position can enhance physical performance. The body released will reestablish alignment to the structure which helps performance.
