20. Mornings Call 5/21/03
“Perhaps no culture has ever possessed as much publicly available knowledge as we do today regarding the transformative capacities of human nature." Michael Murphy
I realized that when I get up in the morning I naturally move and make sound with out thinking about it. The idea of putting ones body on as you arise, with the natural un-patterned motion that springs from our body in the morning, had me reflecting on the many times I saw groups of oriental people doing their Morning Exercise in the park.
Overlooking Riverside park in NYC, there were many mornings at 6 am that I would watch as a group gathered and moved around the lawns slowly, in Tai Chi fashion, as if moving the energy in the space that surrounds the body. Interestingly, each person did his or her own movements.
What a sensible thing to do. Viewing this form of morning exercise in progress with its graceful and natural movements is as captivating as watching animals in nature. The body moves in circles feeling and being with the motion of the legs or arms in motion. I imagine part of the activity also included hearing the morning calls, smelling the morning air, seeing the evolving light and feeling an inner smile.
Evolved from the ancient ways of China for putting on the body after a long nights sleep, this form suggested to me, a way of waking up using this eastern form with some updated western culture additives. Because of the western culture we might handle it differently at first. Sort of a preliminary to the softer Tai chi style until we can blend them both.
As I get out of bed, hitting the ground with the feet, baby fashion, is always a good start to being grounded. Then as I stretch there is usually some kind of spontaneous sound/noise that likes to be made, from a tired kind of groan or wine to a roar that the body feels the need to let go of.
This can be a way of processing any objections to this wake up call. Like, noooooooooo; I don’t want to go to work today, as I hit the ground and act as if I am having a teenage fit (using the outside of the feet of course). Getting all the noossssssss out of the way the yessessss start to enter and we again remember that we are part of the great awakening.
However, I bring this to your attention, because it seems to me we are immediately moving and sounding with what we really feel in the morning, sometimes from the moment we begin to stir. If we explore this and be with it, perhaps we can let go of a lot of stuff spontaneously as well as get into a more intuitive style of body-play. –Happy mornings to you--
