17.  The Paranormal                        05/01/03

The experience of what is called paranormal, or what can be classified as things we experience once in a great while, I feel, could be an available space that we access when needed or when we are not looking for it. I have had about 7 or 8 experiences that seem to fit into the category of paranormal. Each experience has been accompanied with years of reflecting on each one to phantom what they mean in relationship to the ordinary life.

An experience I had last year, while working on a construction sight with Gus Lightheart and Bruce Lano , who have helped build our American Yoga Center over the years, happened while we were jacking up a section of a building to lay in cinderblock. Under the 2-ton pump jack we inserted a 6-inch square ½ in. steel plate. There was a slight angle to the jack as it lifted the wall. I was about 10 feet away from this and at one point, the jack slipped, the plate came flying out and hit me on the inside of the right shin bone. I yelped, at impact and my attention went to the spot on my shin. I felt a severe pain, then heat, then a sickening feeling in my body within the space of about 3 seconds. That changed to a sweat, some nerve sensations up the body in to the head. A sensation of swelling came on and left within a second or two and then a dull pain arose and left. In total the whole experience lasted about 15 seconds. I felt no more pain, there was no swelling and I was totally fine. My friends asked me if I was ok, and I assured them I was fine which I was pleased and thankful for.

Does this qualify as a paranormal experience? I don’t know. To me it illustrated the notion that when we place our full attention on a problem it can resolve. Time is a relative factor, as it usually seems to be in the paranormal experience. The other element of thinking, which had elements of blame, being laid up for a while etc. also flashed and left without building a time based story.

From this experience and others like it I feel the paranormal is a level that we tap into as we need to and the disposition of trust and faith in ourselves and the body help us move into those spaces when required.

I’m sure many have had similar experiences. Please use this space to share a story with others. Thank you.

I have had a few "sports" related experiences that have always amazed me. In one, I was being driven in my friend's car on the Long Island Expressway. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a friend of ours that we knew pulled next to us, at 70 m.p.h., in his convertible. I had a rice cake in my hand at that moment, and my friend in the convertible stuck up his one hand (he was driving with the other) and motioned for me to throw it to him. I flung it, and like an arrow that could not miss, with two cars going 70 m.p.h, it just PLOPPED right into his open hand without him having to move an inch. I don't think that would have happened again if I tried it a thousand times (rice cakes are not very heavy, we were moving very quickly, and it sailed directly in to his palm). How did I do that? It amazed us all, and we still talk about it.

The beginning of Joseph Chilton Pearce's new book, The Biology of Transcendence, tells of what he calls "unconflicted behavior," where it was able to climb a rotten cliff overhang, despite his fear of heights, in such a way that none of his friends could believe he had just done it as soon as he did it, or a week later. It's a fascinating read on how we can do seemingly "paranormal" things.

But then again, I believe that the entire universe is magical and mystical, that reality is indeed being co-created by all of us all the time, and that the type of holonomic interpenetration that some folks talk about is just the beginning of a description of what is actually going on....
