  13.       Non-Ordinary                                                                 4/10/2003

“A sudden flash of enlightenment does not need training. It does not require an educational system. It is inborn nature, not dependent on any kind of training at all. The whole concept of needing training for things is a very weak approach, because it makes us feel we cannot possess the potential in us, and that therefore we have to make ourselves better than we are; we have to try to compete with heroes or masters.”

In the early seventies during a seminar, at a Buddhist Center in Barnet, Vermont called Tail of the Tiger, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche arrived to discourse on the Abhidharma texts of Buddhism. We were gathered and waiting for Rinpoche to enter. He came in, accompanied by three of his students. He was laughing and giggling in a joyful way. He paused, looked at us and said; “I just heard your phrase for the first time, “Ignorance is Bliss.”

I have become accustom to hearing and reading about the subject of ordinary and non-ordinary states of mind being treated as two different things. I subjectively thought; wouldn’t it be nice if non-ordinary states were more of a norm? I mean that feeling of calm and love for everything. That moment when you laugh at the madness that humanity is caught up in. Blending with everything where bird songs feel like they are inside of you.

Then our creative flows would be in association with the intuitive resources that surround us. If this were so, then the resulting activity would progress our ascension, fulfilling some topographic landscape with it own true image.

The blending of the ordinary and the non-ordinary states of consciousness comes to mind as a possible tactile, unitary process. A space where we are in touch with subtle levels and can manifest, animate and present higher states with a wave of the hand or a kiss on the cheek.

My question is, can the ordinary and the non-ordinary, or as some have said the extraordinary, blend? A flowing from one state to the next as is required. An efficiency that serves us, like the perfect Kung Fu, where we slow down time as required. A non-ordinary state that has scale and we can buzz in an out of this range. Is there a free flowing exchange in our physical nature that knows it’s potential and is able to access this? Is it hesitancies that make us scale down to varying degrees of physical awkwardness?

From this entry you may understand why I like to talk about body. My feeling of being awkward in psycho-spiritual discussion is because of my brilliant contemporaries who have examined this hot potato, in such an excellent way, that I would feel happy just to hold their hand and listen.
