 8.  Buns of Steel                                                     April 04, 2003

"Hard ass" could be another way of looking at having buns of steel. I believe the term "hard ass" signifies stubborn, I could be wrong. Nonetheless I don't think this is a condition that we really want to dream of having.

Working with people over the years and using massage, finger pressure, or what I like to call body sculpting. I say body sculpting because, when massaging the body and working in the direction of alignment, the body responds directly, since  the muscle tissue is moved in the direction it was intended to lay.

In this process I often work the buttock muscles and release points, that generally flutter and yield under my fingers. People are usually surprised at the degree of tension in their butt. The results afterward are a softening of the cheeks of the butt and a feeling of the weight dropping in to the legs and ground when walking around. For whatever reason people develop tension in the area of the buttock muscles and this tends to radiate to the rest of the body as related tensions. Therefore releasing of the buttock muscles is felt as a relaxation in the rest of the body.

Another relaxation for us as we are breathing is to feel a relaxation of the anal muscles. This tension very often is brought forth from childhood.

The subject of farting is interesting to kick around and usually will bring on much laughter especially with children. I guess, we can explore the relaxation of the anal muscles and what we do when a fart feels like it is coming on. This may be an embarrassing area but I think the person least offended by a fart is the one passing wind. I observe that while others may back up, I am always interested in my own smells.

Another subject from the "Not often talked about" category:

Constipation is something that people have brought to my attention while they are working to understand their bodies. Constipation is not something that people generally admit to or come to me specifically to treat; yet I find that it is a very common condition that people try to remedy with an assortment of commercial remedies.

When the subject does come up whether in a session or in an offhanded conversation I will suggest; when going to the bathroom start breathing fully so the upper body raises off the lower body and there is more room for the intestines to do what they are designed to do. Keep this lift with the breath while sitting on the toilet.

This is the reverse of squeezing and pushing down, which seems a basic assumption most make for trying to handle any constipation. From the feed back I get it works! One man that I met who hasn’t done any formal breath work, told me of his dilemma with constipation as a life long problem. He was  in his late forties when I met him. I gave him the same simple advice. Months latter when I met him, he smiled and said "Harmon you know I think of you every day!" enough said.

This does support the hypothesis that creating space internally with breath allows the flows in the body to do what they are designed to do more effectively.
