"He's the best physician who knows the worthlessness of the most medicines."
Benjamin Franklin, statesman, author, and inventor (1706-1790)

The Language of the media, formed by the ideas of medical associations seems
frantic these days. This fall season, which is now being called “Flu Season”, we have a Flu vaccine shortage being mediaorized in a tone that can make others think they are missing something if they don’t get a shot.

Like Michael Moore, I am suspicious, that so much money is being made by drug companies because people do not trust there own immune system or develop fears, from the threatening tones of media health messages. This could be, just the innocent nature of ignorance that has worked itself up in a sweat, or there is a real need on many corporations part, to make windfall profits to the detriment of people’s health.

We are not that frail, we can survive a runny nose and a little fever if we get a taste of the flu. I feel some work for the immune system, every once in a while, is productive. Especially since we have the benefit of working with our body naturally, by doing Breathwork, meditation, sex workshops, karate, weekends in the desert and loving our neighbors, of course.

Another health media event was, the press and conversation around The Clinton Heart operation. This became a large opportunity to spin the heart info that really feeds the fear for ones body for such ‘demons’ as chest sensation or pain. Even making the claim that the former president was ‘lucky’ and could have died with out this operation presents a warning. I have heard this claim before from people who were due to have an operation, including one person that was given this suggestion of death if he didn’t have his spine fused. He did the next day and is one unhappy puppy today.

The press conferences after Clintons operation  became a great opportunity to beef up the image of Surgeons and medicine, boarding on the heroic. I do admire the knowledge and ability of Doctors, but at the same time, I have this 40 year history of stories of procedures that are unnecessary and actually create new problems. Maybe I have the wrong side of the animal here, however, I feel that much of the procedures to solve, pain issues may not be necessary.

The trauma to the body of an 84 year old person getting a hip replacement, when they can get around with a cane seems excessive. But then, I personally know such conditions can be treated with natural, non-intrusive bodywork that restores alignment to the walk, and educates the individual to restore and progress with their body.

Pain is telling us something, and asking us something also. It is telling us we need to give something attention. It is also asking us to solve this problem naturally first, without the use of a “Medical Card”. Evidence suggests that the process in our total body system will seek out the curative procedures or herbal remedies, sort of a 2nd immune system, engaging the brain and other internal intelligences that can solve this problem. Like the stories we hear of animals that find a tree bark or a plant to solve their problem.

Education about our body presented by the natural health culture, spins circles around the majority of traditionally established procedures that have neglected to integrate some historical remedies by shamans, witches, fairies, angels as well as a host of new approaches developed within the last 60 years that educate and refine our form.

Basically, if some one where to ask me what I have found in life that is helpful for both my health and performance through the different ages of life I would have to say that, breathing fully and understanding the basics of alignment have worked for me. I feel this is the most useful knowledge and medicine that I can take with me wherever I go and work with when things seem off. Also over 40 years of presenting this subject illustrates to me and others just how beneficial these practices are.

For most people the body presents one thing or another that we may not expect, but if we trust the body and our instincts, while working with our body we may solve a problem faster then if we run to the doctor for every thing that arises. Jon Kabat Zinn’s work, treats many people who have used the medical system with out satisfaction and now need to learn to manage and handle their pain. The breathing and mindfulness he teaches is one of the best methods for most.

Breathwork, like body work helps us develop a feeling of continuity with time and space. However, Breathwork is about the many ways we can use breathing to understand the dynamics of our development. The form of breathing used for developing and working with our alignment tends to work very well with any somatics, that seem worrisome or confusing when they come on to the body. An example that seems fairly direct would be stomach aches. We can take a host of products that claim to solve the problem or we can start to create space internally in the stomach with expansive breath and see what that yields. I have found that this works in the majority of cases within a half hour or shorter. That certainly beats adding substances to the system that can be questionable and come with labels that warn of side effects.

Taking responsibility for our own body and health today is easier than it has ever been since so much useful information is available to us over the net or by doctors and nurses who are informed of the many alternatives that are available to us. Hatha Yoga along with the many modalities that have come of age provides a wonderful assortment of things we can do to work with our own body. So trusting our body and knowing it is a lot stronger and more dynamic than we are led to believe is my message here.

“Only the children know what they’re looking for,” said the little prince. “they spend their time on a rag doll and it becomes very important, and if it’s taken away from them, they cry…”

“They’re lucky,” the switchman said."

Harmon,

I greatly appreciate your remarks concerning mainstream medicine. Health care costs are taking a huge toll on American financial resources. High priced tests, drugs and procedures are putting traditional health care beyond the means of many average Americans.

Paradoxically, there are substitutes for standard allopathic care that could, once again, make health care affordable. But given the economic realities and the duplicity of certain people in the health care industry, it seems unlikely that such regimens will come into common use any time soon.

Sadly, the popular press has shirked their responsibility in educating people about such alternative methods.
